PostSubject: Rest Bay Weather Bad News   Sun Feb 16, 2014 1:42 pm

Bad news I am afraid, after the latest storms the sensor unit and the anemometer head are in a bad way.
The solar panel on the sensor box has broken and allowed lots of lovely salty water inside, this has lead to creeping death, I thought it was battery problems but on opening the unit a good quantity of water ran out. All of the connectors are a lovely green colour, TBH its past any kind of economic repair. In addition the anemometer head has taken a beating too. The direction vane bearing is very stiff and its doesn't want to move.

Sarah is going to let me know on how much is left in the kitty.
As far as I can see we need the following

Anemometer head http://www.skyview.co.uk/acatalog/DAV_6410.html £150
ISS Main board http://www.skyview.co.uk/acatalog/DAV_7345978.html £180
ISS cover http://www.skyview.co.uk/acatalog/DAV_7345114.html £60

Total cost = 390 Sad

Alternatively we can grab a completely new unit (which has no wireless link so the battery/solar issue goes away)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DAVIS-VANTAGE-PRO-demo-WEATHER-STATION-2-6152CEU-CABLE-WEATHER-STATIONS-/380825043301?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Weather_Stations&hash=item58aaf10165

This is 362quid so cheaper and better .
They only have 5 of these ex demo units left so if we want to do this we need to decide quick.

I would have to check with the committee members but I would like to think that the SWWKSC would be able to help out.

Didn't Vlad (Valgard) mention about being able to obtain the same kit they use on wind turbines ?

Sonny he did but most of that kit uses dedicated industrial data monitors .
I looked at a few , the interface boxes can cost 1000s and they don't have any easy software to drive them like these semi pro units . Also it all went quiet too .

heh, the small child also needs to be in front of the camera, so we can see how much he\she gets buffeted around.

Can Shireen get some 'guinea pigs' working from next week during half term. We can then take a vote on which one to keep for the task  Very Happy

Whilst I think the WS is a fantastic idea and all the work Alun puts into this is commendable. I really do, thanks Alun. cheers
And thanks to the people who spent some of their spare time last year getting it all up and running

But didn't we spend 400 6mths ago? or was it a year ago, I know it took some time to get it all together and working
and we're now looking at spending another 400
Or have we just been unlucky and the next purchase will last longer Question

Would it be better to try and get more money and spend some more on something that will last longer than 6mths?

Sure it might take some time to get there, but we have a couple more months til summer when most of us will want to use it more

No, I do not have any suggestions on what we should buy, or should do

Just saying . . .  Neutral

we didnt spend that much.
We spent approx 50 on new temp sensors. and 75 for a new head for aber , which will be back on line in the next few weeks. (Remos have sorted out a cherry picker so we can get as high as possible on the post next to the cafe.) We have never had to replace the head at rest so its managed 7 years not too bad.

We also bought two micro computers and dedicated software as the PCs had become unreliable for about 50 each .

I have looked at the pro stuff, forget it unless you have very very deep pockets. A professional anemometer alone is over 4000 GBP. Especially if you go to ultrasonics which are the most reliable.
Then you need a dedicated logger with the relavent software.

The units we have now cost ME over 1000 each when bought new. they have come dowm a little now perhaps 800 with the data logger interface.
There are also cheaper units like maplin sell , i rekon they would last a week or so at rest.
Salt, sand and wind are not a great combination.

yes, thanks for clarifying Smile

I didn't remember how much was spent, hence the Q

I am definitely not suggesting we spend money on equipment that will be good enough for a 'home user'
As you point out, sitting at the seafront will take it's toll on equipment and the equipment should be up to the job or we are wasting money. Not suggesting what you have done or money spent is wasted

I knew the kit used out on the buoys and wind turbines etc. cost a lot because they have to send reports reliably & endure the harsh weather conditions.

I guess the question I was trying to get to is can we generate over 6k for that type of equipment? Probably, but it would take time and a lot of effort. Maybe an angle would be to get some business's to contribute. But as it's rest the business there wouldn't want to contribute vast sums as they wouldn't really see a good return on their money. Not many businesses there anyways

Plus we would need to be careful on what businesses contribute as they might want to control and take over the control of the equipment making it for profit or kudos. Thus shrinking the target audience

I think Blast generously contributing some money is a really nice thing. Because I know they are not in it for kudos, they are in it for the love of sharing it (plus it's Tax deductible)  Very Happy

A compromise has to be made

So I bow down to your knowledge Alun Smile

I am only thinking aloud, maybe I should keep most of it inside  Laughing

Bizzare as it sounds, the flag option is a good one!  A calibrated windsock in view of the webcam would be a cheaper and easier option!  It would indicate wind strength and direction.  LOL...well, maybe not then.

Anyhow, I'm pretty certain the members of SWWKSC will vote in favour of a contribution, but if not, you have a further tenner from me! No Problem.  Also, let me know when you intend to install this as I don't have a problem helping out again.

All we need is a web cam on the golf course flag.

Back in the day when we started kitesurfing we would look at that flag if it was out straight it was 12m kite.
If it was flapping like fuk it was 9m

Sporty is right let's go with the wind sock it more reliable than a wind meter

Or am I just old lol

People need to read the wind as it is .

Yes yes i no the wind meter helps but learn to read the wind like we use to do and the forecast

Just saying lol
