PostSubject: weather stations .... where are we   Sat Apr 13, 2013 4:15 am

so things have dragged on a little.
the club has purchased the replacement temp sensors and they are ready to go.
I have a station for remos ( aberavon ) but I have no working wind sensor.
we need to get one of these, it's a long story as to why I have the station and no sensor , but it involves a bitter ex wife and you really don't want to know.....
in addition we also now need a replacement at rest too as some person shot the old one !
I found some ex demo ones on eBay they are about 75 quid each.

so the long and short is we need to raise about 150 to get them both back online. Marc/blast going to help with rest , what's the feeling regarding Aber ?

anyone able to help in any way ! time and money !

generally so people know the running costs of these are pretty low. we tend to have to replace the wind sensors every 3 years or so as the salt gets into them. normally they are 150 but I found the ones above for half price

Happy to contribute financially, sure others that don't live by the beach would be happy to do so too?

Here is my suggestion:

In the past Alun has paid for the stations and the running costs, fair play to him for that but it's not going to continue. Past requests for donations have not gone well. Everyone wants a weather station (WS from now on) or ideally both stations back on line. A £10 donation is less the cost of fuel for a wasted journey for most people.

I suggest that Alun costs the repair and upgrade of one of the WS (we can decide about which one) and also estimate a cost for running and maintaining the WS for the next two years. Once we have a rough idea of what the amount is a PayPal account is set up and once the target for each WS is reached it can go back online. The costs are now covered. If it helps a sticky topic could be set up on here so that people can show that they have donated so that they can feel smug/good about themselves.

There are people who are willing to help maintain/reboot the WS and they need to make themselves known to Alun so that they can learn how to keep the WS running throughout the year so that Alun doesn't have to do all the work.

We all want these WS back online, the SWWKSC has helped out as have Blast Kiteboarding. It's time for individuals to put their money where their mouth is and stump up a bit of cash. I'm more than happy to get the ball rolling if Alun is in agreement.

Sounds good to me James Smile
I think that's a good idea . I tried to quantify the costs above .
The consoles have never broken down . The only things that fail are the temp sensors approx 25 and the anemometers . The average life of those seems to be in excess of three years .

So lets see what happens .

James count me in, no prob cash and checking machines..

On another note, the webcams on Rest and Coney on MSW are really helpful, if we could maybe put a flag up on the visible structures, one being the lifeguard hut, the other a beach trader, this would give another indication of conditions for the "commuters" of local conditions..

Have a look you will se what I mean..

Okay so with a few people already up for a donation I think it could well work. Some things that need to be sorted out before money starts changing hands are:

Which is the first W/S to get back online.
Cost for repair/upgrade and 2 years(?) running costs.
Names of W/S caretakers.

I would suggest if the target is not met then the PayPal donations are refunded but I can't really see that happening.

Good idea Richie but I think we should try and focus on 1 W/S to start with!!

Same here. There are many convoluted methods for recovering the costs for these WS's, but by far the easiest is a simple donations page. I know this has been tried before and failed, but let's give it another shot and see how this progresses. I think publicity of the donations page is also important, as many potential donations could be lost through lack of awareness. Everyone I've spoken to about it seems more than happy to put their hand in their pocket, so it should pose no problem raising the capital required.

James if you need a hand with setting this up, let me know.

Let's wait to see what the estimated cost is from Alun then we can go from there.

The W/S are invaluable to me when it costs £20 per trip to the beach in fuel. I think we should aim to get both W/S working as I suspect people will lose interest after the first one is fixed & may be reluctant to donate a second time. I'm more than happy to contribute to the costs, but a bit too far away to offer assistance in rebooting etc. Set up the Pay Pal account ASAP, I'll put some money in. It needs to be made very obvious to members that now is the time to contribute so that work can go ahead, perhaps advertise it on the forum some how?

Blast have kindly offered to get the Rest Bay W/S online. Once we see the figures from Alun we can get a PayPal account set up.

I've set up a PayPal account for the Aber wind meter, I'll put it up here, if non of the comittee has any objections, I personally don't see the point in waiting for quotes from Alun if people are willing to donate money now. If there's not enough donated we'll just have to ask for more money or more people to put their hand in their pocket. If there's money let over then it can stay there for the next repair / replacement. I will post up the names of people who have paid and their amount if that is the general request, let's get the ball rolling now that we have our SW winds back.

Well done for setting up an account Sarah but I do think it's important to know a rough idea of how much the repair and running costs are before money starts being donated. And we do need people other than Alun to volunteer to help maintain the W/S so that the money donated is actually going to a fully working W/S and not one that is constantly in need of a reboot.

I can help out with keeping them running. I get loads of spare time during the day and would be happy to contribute. @ Alun: Let me know a good time to show me the set up.

Also happy to make a donation when the paypal account is up.

People want it up now! They don't want to b wasting any more money on journeys to the beach when there turns out to b no wind. If people start donating money now, as soon as we know what the cost for Aber is we can get it sorted ASAP?

I did give a cost as near as I can get it.
if you budget 150 every two years that will do it unless something unexpected happens

as I allready said, experience shows the temp sensor lasts on average 1-2 years $ 25 ea
the anemometer about three at £ 150 . I have sourced 4 of these half price .
battery for sensors 3.75 lasts a year.

broadband is taken care of

Andy g yeah we need to meet at rest and I can show ya what's what. do like climbing on roofs ?

Right, the PayPal address is sw.kiting@gmail.com

The consensus at the club meeting last week was to put names and donations up here so let me know if you prefer not to be put up here. Thanks
