PostSubject: Aberavon Access URGENT   Fri Mar 15, 2013 8:13 am

There is NO longer a car park at Aber at the Kite area. The old car park has just been barriered off today.
Construction of the latest care home has started and is expected to last 57 weeks
the council have also added yellow lines to the road so no parking 10am till 8pm 1 aptil - sept
I have been on site this morning , the builders are making a small temporary car park just past the bus shelter with room for about 10 cars. That is due to be done Monday next week. There is no sign of a start to building the proper replacement car park.
If you use this beach now is the time to speak to the council. will post details later after i have spoken to them

just come off phone from council.
they plan to create a new " temporary " car park similar to what we allready had between the site and the navy club. there will be a hole in the wall , hardcore and a trak made to the beach.
this should be done next week assuming npt planning don't put a spanner in the works . they are meeting on site 9 am Monday but amenities don't envisage planning causing grief. I have offered to represent local kite users if it will help. we will see what happens.
the council say the temp car park is for 50 cars similar in size to the one we have now.

Well, I popped an email in to them too, asking what they were intending to do, so will post that up when I get a reply.

Cheers Alun...And perhaps there'll be some good news too. We all know the implications of loosing a parking space there.

Subject: RE: Access to Aberavon Beach

Dear Melissa,

Thank you for your prompt response. This is the site that I am referring to. I am pleased to hear that alternative parking arrangements have been put in place to ensure that the public can maintain access to this beach. I look forward to seeing the new car park and trust that access to this beach will not be compromised.

Kind regards,

Kelvin

Dear Mr Lake

I can confirm that planning permission has been granted for a 16 bedroom detached respite care home (C2 use) with associated buildings, works and car parking on land opposite 34-54 Scarlet Avenue, which may be the site you are referring to based on your description of the site?

The plans can be viewed on the Neath Port Talbot website, at www.npt.gov.uk under planning application reference P2011/0985.

A temporary (albeit smaller) car park is to be provided as part of this scheme adjacent to the application site, prior to the commencement of construction works on the development.

I hope this clarifies.

Melissa Hall

Subject: Access to Aberavon Beach
Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you regarding access to the Western end of Aberavon Beach in Port Talbot. I am a local kitesurfer and have regularly used this beach for approximately the last 3 years. The local kitesurfing community deliberately use the Western end of the beach to ensure that there is plenty of space between the kitersurfers and the other members of the public that use this beach – thus ensuring that everyone can swim, surf and enjoy this beautiful beach in safety.

In order to gain access to this end of the beach, users have historically parked in the car park off of Scarlet Avenue. I understand that this weekend, access to this land has been stopped due to the building of a care home in this location. In addition to this, parking on Scarlet Avenue has been restricted, further restricting access to the beach.

A representative of the local kitesurfing community informs me that it is planned to build a new car park such that access to the beach is not affected. I would like to show support for this resolution to ensure access to the beach is maintained. I would also be grateful if you could inform me of the proposed future plans for this site.

If you have any questions, or need me to clarify any of the above, please do not hesitate in contacting me.

Kind Regards,

Kelvin

Again a copy and paste of my email answer.
I don't like the 'temporary, smaller carpark', how temporary?

No sign yet of a start yet . I will call my contact again and see how planning went . I assume once they bash a hole in the wall and make an access road people will park all over . Builders say 10-20 cars . Amenities said 50+ wonder what will actually happen

I think we are ok to park on grass too, but once the warm weather comes you wont get in if you are not early. My guess is there are going to be a load of workmen on the site given the mumbers of portacabins they have delivered.

Anyone remember that storm in 1986/7 in the winter and that part of the beach almost got washed away. Why would anyone build anything there, it'll take a hammering the next time there's a storm at high tide.
