What type of board would be best for Brazil? Twin-tip, surf board?

I would just stick to a twin tip Vic, learning on a surf board can take months, sometimes years. It's best to stick to what u know. :-)

It's time to be looking at booking flights, BUT, I'm having a nightmare so I need a bit of input from everyone. We have a choice of either, having a 1 stop flight, but the first flight is 12hrs and a shorter lay over waiting for the next flight. OR, a 2 stop flight but with one of the lay overs being 9 hrs or so, not that much difference in the price at the moment, coming up at around £800 - £900. Please let me know ASAP your opinion as some days they are looking worse than others.

Looks like we will have to also fly out on the evening of the Fri 15th, I hope that's going to be ok.

In response to Abi's question about Jabs, we've never had any, but they recommend Hep A, typhoid and a tetanus booster.

Hi Sarah,
Edited last reply as I see it is not that simple...

Not so keen on a 9 hour stop over.

What sort of total travel times are we looking at?

Flying out on Fri eve should be Ok for me.

Thanks
Dave

Dave we either have a choice of a 12hr flight, then a 2 hr change over and then another flight, total time approx 17-18hrs. Or, we have an initial 1.5hr flight, 2hr stop over, a further 6hr flight, 9hr stop over and then a further 2-3hr flight, total time of approx 18-20hrs. I guess it depends on whether people prefer to b sat on a plane for 12hrs or hanging around in an airport.

Does that all make sense? :-0

Cheers Pete.

"Cheers Pete"? Name &/or sex change???

Does it make any difference wrt airlines and excess baggage charges? We wouldn't want to get stung for 2 or 3 times what UA tried to put on us in Hatteras!

I assume we fly from Gatwick?

Now you have explained the options, I don't have any particularly strong feelings either way..

Sunday looks promising...may see you then.

£854 each for the flight, leaving Friday, 15th at 20.15. We land in Brazil sat morning at 11am so we get an extra day of kiting if we have the energy :-) Let me know if u want me to book your flight for u, or I can put the link up for anyone who prefers to book their own. I will need the money before I book though.

Hi Sarah, have a quick question about luggage as I'm sure you and Marc have it well sorted having done it so many times. As we're moving around quite a bit is it easier to take your kite bag and then a backpack for normal clothes or do you do suitcases? Or do I need to pack light and get it all in my kite bag? Shocked

Hi Sophie,

We should hopefully be able to leave our large kiteboard bags at the first Pousada we stay at in Cumbucu (we did this last year) but will have to check that this is ok with a larger group of us this time.
Then we just take the boards/kites in the boot and clothes in a separate holdall. The extra red bag with Epic kites is ideal for travel, super light but enough to protect your kite in the car etc

We try not to have kit on the roof as we try to keep it a bit more discreet that we are tourists, but we may have to this trip.

Hi Sarah,
Do we know what the baggage allowance (& excess for board bag) is?
It looks like it is different for international & internal flights, with TAM.

If you could post up the flight details (flight Nos) in both directions it may help..also are we flying back ( leaving ) on Fri or sat?

Thanks

Hope Tiree delivers for you !!!

For those with smartphones/tablets, CITYMAPS2GO is a good offline map app.
You can download 1 map with the free version (full version is only a couple of £s)
The download for Cumbuco covers (I think) all the areas we will be kiting.
May be useful?

Been speaking to Jo Wilson up here at The Wavemasters and she highly recommended the flights with Tam via Sao Paolo..maybe an hour or two in total more but way bigger allowance/more leg room/newer planes and better comforts i.e tv etc

Dave you wont need a map you've got us!!

I've been trying to workout the sports allowance but am now confused, as seems to always happen, here are the 2 links I've found

http://www.lan.com/en_uk/sitio_personas/plan-and-book/baggage-info/special-baggage/

http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/TAM_Airlines/baggage.php

Let me know what you guys think?

Looks like you are allowed two pieces of checked luggage at 23kg each. If one of the pieces is sports luggage, instead of the maxium linear of 158cm (normal luggage) you will be allowed up to 203 linear cm except for surf boards, which can have a maximum of 300 linear cm.
Looks like if the weight or linea exceeds you will be charged a % of excess baggage fee which is EUR70.

But then that is just my take... it could probably be read in a million different ways.

Think the 1st link is for LAN as opposed to TAM?
Don't know if this will work but more confusing info can be found here.
https://www.tam.com.br/b2c/vgn/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=45a326d02e2da210VgnVCM1000009508020aRCRD

Spoke to them this eve. I was told:
Hold allowance is two items up to 32kg (for our flights)
If one of these is oversize sports equipment (confirmed this applies to a surfboard) it is an extra 33% of £120 ie about £40 (each way)...Bargain!

Roll on.

Yeh we spoke to seasoned Brazil addict Jo Wilson whilst in Tiree (randomly bumped into her in the pub - the only pub)
and she always uses Tam as they are better planes, more space better allowances

I did my first trip ever to Brazil with Jo a good few years back and she'd already been there many times competing....top lass!

Ok guys, I wasn't going to pre-book the cars but I've had to coz of it being their peak season. Therefore I will need £180 per person please. This is for 4 cars for the 10 days we're going up the coast. It DOES NOT include petrol or the cost of the drivers we will need to hire when we're in Jerri. Also can one more person volunteer to drive please. Thanks. 5 weeks and 4 days! cheers cheers

Not long now , Smile just wondering if you knew which hotels take cards and which are cash ?! I am assuming guides are cash only . Just starting to think about cash/ card options. Was thinking about pre paid credit card from post office ? How did that work out in Portugal? Easier or just the same as any other credit card?!

Going on last year, only the pousada in Jerri took card all the others require cash. Remember to inform your bank that you're going abroad so they can register your debit and/or credit card, otherwise it'll be blocked the 1st time you use it.

There are more and more places accepting cards but you can't assume that they will. Most restaurants take card, as far as I remember.

Hi Sarah,

Are you able to provide an estimate on what we need to budget for accommodation, fuel, drivers etc while we're there please? I know you won't know exact figures, but it would be handy to have a guide on what cash we need to get.

Not long to go now..... cheers cheers cheers

Accommodation will roughly b the same as what you've paid, obviously depending on exchange rate. Drivers r 80 Real each driver per day, but we possibly won't need all 4 cars everyday while we're in Jerri. Fuel, I can't really remember, but it wasn't that much.

A buggy back up the beach in cumbuco from a downwinder is 40 real per buggy, seats 4 people.

Are you trying to buy as many things as possible?

I would think you would be bringing some of that back. Or you could be the bank for the rest of them Laughing

When we went, we spent 1600 between the two of us, but no drivers, fuel, car rental or buggy pick ups

Mojito's cost 7 real, the best ones are made in the 0031 restaurant
Acai smoothies made with lemon from the Acai restaurant in Cumbuco are just awesome @ 8 real (you can stand a knife in it)

food is pretty cheap too. One thing to take in mind when ordering 'meat' they like to cook it til it's nicely dried out. So if you have a steak, make sure they understand you do not want a dried up one, but a nice bloody one. If you like it that way of course Wink

We also know plenty of the cheaper places to eat/drink where the locals go which can save a fortune, especially in Cumbucu
Our main expense will be the car rental and the driver but the driver is only whilst in Jeri.
And of course the pousadas

Yeah, plenty of places where the locals eat & drink = much cheapness = four people, two drinks each and three plates of food to share = 21 real

One thing to take into consideration when you get there. The sunny it's pretty relentless and is very warm from 9am ish. So for the first few days you might want to wear a hat of some sort, until you acclimatise
Also some sunnies CLICKY to wear on the water. One guy there was saying his eyes felt a bit like arc eye (needles in the eyes) due to the reflection from the water. He was wearing sunnies every day from then on

Brilliant points above, it is the ONLY place where I HAVE to wear water sunnies!
I've been in agony with my eyes to the point where I have had to stop half way on a downwinder.

I'll do a full thingy of what the rough plan is for the trip in the next day or so.
Friends (approx 13stone) there at the moment further up north are using 7's and they rarely use that small a kite.

You can make the trip as cheap or as expensive as you like, with regards to food. There are still non-local places to eat that are still fairly cheap, and it depends on what and how much you drink.

A few things that you will need to take with you:

Water glasses ( http://www.blastkiteboarding.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=129 )

Rash vests ( anything on the mystic website we can get)

Board shorts. ( check out the mystic website)

A repair kit for your kite ( http://www.blastkiteboarding.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewCat&catId=69 )

Decent sun lotion, we recommend P20, several people have changed to this since we've been recommending it.
