Thanks, Sarah. We'd be happy to pay the £50 kitty up front, but will go with whatever makes it easier for you. Does the £280 final price include the bus to and from the airport?

Roll on May... Cool

Hi Sarah,
Great to hear you are back on the water.

Do we know how/when/where we pay the sports bag surcharge?
Also do you know if the house have broadband/wifi?

Thanks

We have to pay for the sports bags at the airport so we have to b at the airport 3hrs before the flight to check in.
The house does have wifi. They provide swimming pool towels and there is a washing machine and tumble drier.

Anything else just shout bounce

Hi all,
Is anybody else planning on driving to Heathrow the night before (hotel + parking)?

If so, did you find any particularly good deals?

Thanks
Dave

Water temp changing 15 degrees in 5 days! That is going some.

From http://www.kiteforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2380099&start=10

Hello Ecoastprock. This year has been a very long winter. Five days ago it was so warm with 75 degrees air temperature, the sound was around 70 degrees. And the ocean was 58 degrees. Right now the sound is 55 degrees and the ocean is 54 degrees and the air temperature is 52 degrees. Today I was using a full 4/3 wet suit. But I am sure that in 10 days it will go back to normal. Which means you won't need a suit. Maybe bring a shorty 3/2 if you plan to kite in the ocean down south. This was today and yesterday in Avon and at the Light House. Very cold for end of April.

affraid Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad United Airlines have updated their baggage charges:

Surfboard/wakeboard
United Airlines will accept surfboards or wakeboards as checked baggage as long as they are packed in an appropriate surfboard or wakeboard bag that does not weigh more than 99.9 pounds. The service charge for a surfboard or wakeboard bag is $100 (each way) for travel between the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and $200 (each way) for all other travel.

The skeg/fin must be removed or well padded. The entire board must be encased in a suitable container to avoid scratching. United Airlines shall not be liable for damage to a surfboard. Excess Valuation may not be purchased for a surfboard/wakeboard.

Surfboards, wakeboards and surfboard bags weighing more than 99.9 pounds (45.3 kg) will not be accepted as checked baggage.

Note: On United Airlines flights, surfboards, wakeboards or surfboard bags greater than 115 inches (292 cm) in length will not be accepted as checked baggage. On United Express flights, surfboards, wakeboards or surfboard bags greater than 80 inches (203 cm) in length will not be accepted as checked baggage.

Surfboards and wakeboards will be transported subject to load capacities of the aircraft on any itinerary involving a United Express flight.

Surfboards and wakeboards will not be accepted during an excess baggage embargo when no excess baggage is allowed. Exception: Surfboards will be accepted to Costa Rica during an
embargo period.

I guess UK/Europe comes under "all other travel" at $200 each way. Shocked Shocked

I can't find any mention of excess charges relating to when the flight booking was made.
All the info is here if anyone wants a read (and get frustrated) for themselves: https://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/sports.aspx

Hi all.
Just noticed the cabin baggage size limit is a bit smaller than some airlines:

"The maximum combined linear measurement (length + width + height) of carry-on bags must not exceed 14 inches x 9 inches x 22 inches (23 x 35 x 56 cm) or 45 linear inches (114 cm)."

I think 35cm is a bit narrower than the norm.
I could have got caught out if I used my normal bag.

Not only is it looking windy but also warm.
Hurrah!

I've just come off the phone to Kathy at United Airlines (Tel 0845 607 6760) to confirm surfboard baggage limits and she confirmed as it states on the website:

Exception: Surfboards will be accepted to Costa Rica during an embargo period

So, 45kg is the max weight for surfboard equipment. I did query it saying that other airlines only take a max of 32kg, but she said that for surfboards they allow extra. This is probably why the price has gone up! I don't think we'll be taking that much in our surfboard bag though! Shocked There's no requirement to prior book it and $200 each way is to be paid when you check in.

23kg is still the max for normal hold luggage up to a max of 32kg at excess baggage cost. Hand baggage is 18kg within the dimensions previously posted by Dave.

That's great, thanks Sarah. Heathrow has a baggage limit of 32kgs themselves, so please don't make your bags over that or they can refuse to take it!

All.
the above is true for surfboards.
Kiteboards have their own category.

I too have just spoken to Kathy.
She confirmed it is $100 for "one kiteboard or one bag containing equipment used in kiteboarding as checked baggage."
DON'T SAY IT IS A SURFBOARD!

She also confirmed there is no 23kg weight limit.

Phew!

Phew!
On the website it says that $100 service charge applies for kiteboards weighing up to 23kg, then excess baggage rates also apply after that for your extra kgs. That's how I read it anyway...

If the kiteboard or kiteboard container is over 50 pounds (23kg) or is greater than 62 (158 cm) total linear inches (L + W + H), a $100 service charge applies each way. The service charge is in addition to any excess baggage charges that may apply, but first or second bag charges do not apply.

I think either way, they've got you unless your bag is not above 23kg and measures less than the 158cm total dimensions. Rolling Eyes

On another note. I've been trying to get insurance through Columbus Direct with their added water sports thing like i've done before but the option hasn't come up anywhere. It includes kitesurfing on a lake but not in the sea? Anyone else found this? I've tried all the options and run through right up until you have to pay. So I've gone with Dogtag instead.

yeah it had kitesurfing as a normal cover but only covered if you are on a lake. Previously I've added a water sports package for £8/9 and its then included Kitesurfing for the sea. This time when I've tried the water sport package part hasn't appeared.

We got ours with www.essentialtravel.co.uk last year before we went to Brazil. Their grade 1 level covers kitesurfing. Cost us £77 for the year then, but could be a bit more by now.

https://www.sportscoverdirect.com/sports-travel-insurance/

they cover surfing kitesurfing biking pretty much anything , you get a customised quote or you can get cover to just supplement what you have allready if it say excludes kitesurfing

I just noticed that it actually seems to cover your kit too ! someone with better legalese eyes should check the small print !
