PostSubject: Broughton to Pembrey   Mon Sep 07, 2009 4:33 pm

Hi, Just joined. Have been kiting for a while and am living in Newport. Kite mostly Aberavon/Pembrey on RRD and Ocean Rodeo.

A few of us were thinking of trying the above with a jet ski escort on a South Westerly. I expect this has been done before. Anyone any experience or advice.
Whays the tidal influence like further out? Any rocks or sandbars etc that are a hazard. Any idea how long it would actually take etc. Guessing High tide would be the best option with a steady wind forecast.

All the Best Scotty
PS Hope Marc is OK.

Hi
There are some fairly rough currents and loads of sand bars. Im sure its doable but definatly with some sort of cover.
I would practice jet ski rescue first , its not as easy as it looks.
Sounds like fun though

I watched two kites go across the estuary a while back (i saw them on the horizon from Llanelli). You'd probbly want more of a westerly, as a south westerly would be blocked off by the headland making it gust as hell on Broughton.

As for time - a lot less than you'd think. We did a downwinder recently and were amazed how quickly you cover the ground. You'd probably get over in 15/20 minutes.

I've been pretty much all the way across, but bottled it as we hd no cover, the wind was fairly low and the waves really started building towards the broughton side.

You'd wouldn't want a rising tide as the current into the estuary mouth would make keeping ground upwind virtually impossible.

If you do decide to do it I'd be well up for joining you (if you didn't mind).

Hi, Cheers for the replies.
Take your point on the South Westerlies at Broughton especially the top end by the caravan park
should be Ok furher down the main beach. If you go on a pure Westerly though your going to land nearer Bury port depending upon how much up wind you can go. Need to go back also unless someone volunteers to drive the other side in case it someone bottles it.
On incoming/high tide the sandbars and currents would hopefully be less of a factor. wouldn't chance it with the tide going out, just in case. Will practice deep water packdowns but the jumping on a jetski will have to wait. As long as a kite doesn't deflate, the wind does not increase too much or doesn't stop altogether it should be OK (if this happens the jetski will have it's work cut out!) at least your not going to travel so fast in the water with no wind!
If we can get the cover and there are a few places left will give you a shout Who ever goes will have to pay for the ski (maybe £100ish total). Hopefully get something sorted. Thanks Scotty

Ooops. I mis-read as Pembrey to broughton (not the other way round). I think Pembrey to broughton on a westerly would be easier, then head back and land downwind at llanelli. You'd only need a cars on one side of the estuary then (Pembrey and Llanelli) - If the worst happened then you'd only end up getting blown up the estuary.
